Rick Stanley on vocals and self-built solid pecan Tara McFall-style
harp. Robin Pfoutz on a century old birdseye maple/spruce cello.
Joining Border Lord members are Pat Egan on Santa Cruz guitar
and harmony vocals; and Tim Britton on wooden flute, Copeland
whistle, and bodhran. All arrangements by Border Lord. Produced
and engineered by Tim Britton. More information on Border
Lord. "We
recorded live to two track, using only a modified Crown SASSP
stereo microphone, with a built-in, custom made, minimalist
mic preamp, both battery powered, through a two meter pair
of Mapleshade Omega Micro interconnects directly into a Sony
DTC-A8 DAT recorder with Super Bit Mapping, AC line conditioned
by Chang Lightspeed and Coherent Music Systems, using no overdubbing,
mixing, compression, EQ, reverb, or other artificial enhancement.
In stark contrast to modern recording trends, this approach
renders the music as it is, in all its vulnerability, intimacy,
and raw power. We feel this best serves the music as we know
and love it."

This is
a beautiful album of Rick Stanley playing a low-headed Irish
harp he designed and hand-built, singing five of his favorite
traditional Scottish and Irish ballads. The CD also features
two contemporary Scottish ballads: ‘Lover’s Heart’
written by Andy Stewart and Phil Cunningham, and ‘The
Last Trip Home’ written by The Battlefield Band’s
Davy Steele and John McCusker. The remaining five tracks feature
a traditional air, and four original ballads written by Rick,
including the title cut of the CD, a moving piece about Mary
Queen of Scots and her loyal husband, the Earl of Bothwell.

Rick Stanley
and co-singer/songwriter Pamela Polland formed The Gentle Soul
in 1966. Rick and Pamela wrote, recorded and performed on the
cutting edge of the Folk/Rock Era for the next three years.
Although the Gentle Soul only released one album during that
time, they surrounded themselves with the likes of Ry Cooder,
Taj Mahal, Van Dyke Parks, Jack Neitzche, Larry Knechtel, and
many other talented musicians. Produced by Terry Melcher (The
Byrds, Paul Revere & The Raiders), the Gentle Soul recordings
are a classic. "...beautiful,
ornate and captivating..."
(Dirty Linen, #116, February/March '05)

sides and four previously unissued tracks – and unpublished
photos from the group’s archives.
